ChatGPT Teaches Writing: A Course on Using AI to Write

Nope, the machine isn’t doing ALL the work. I’m asking the f***ing questions!

As more course creators teach folks how to write using ChatGPT, one question arises: “Why can’t ChatGPT do its own teaching?”

So, I’m running a short experiment. I’ll coach ChatGPT to build its own course. [I’m not a course creator, nor is the tool, so don’t expect miracles.]

Before we get started:

  1. I’m not the one creating the course. I’m simply asking the questions. So, all the text in the course belongs to ChatGPT. I cut paragraphs and had Grammarly edit some sentences. But no words in the course are my own.
  2. I’ve been spinning these questions more times than you can imagine (by the way, did you know there’s a limited number of requests you can have in one hour?). So, this isn’t 100% AI work.
  3. I made the images. (Thanks, Canva!) I’m sure ChatGPT could have done a better job, but I wanted to keep things simple.
  4. I used positive reinforcement during my conversations with ChatGPT. No AI writing assistant was hurt in the process.

It’s all available right here, on this platform.

I’ll publish a new lesson every day until we finish the course (or until ChatGPT decides I’m too pushy and throws me out).

GhatGPT suggests we break it into ten lessons.

Let’s get started!

What is ChatGPT, and how it works

You know how sometimes you have a hard time coming up with what to write or how to say something? ChatGPT is like a super smart friend who can help you with that. It has been trained in many different texts, so it knows how to write sentences and paragraphs that make sense.

ChatGPT defines ChatGPT

Imagine having a buddy who has read many books and stories. This buddy has gotten really good at understanding how words go together to make sentences that make sense.

When you ask ChatGPT to write something, it takes your words and uses them to make a new sentence. It keeps doing this until it has written a whole paragraph or even a whole story!

Think of it as having a writing helper to give you new ideas and improve your writing.

How can ChatGPT be used for writing?

You’re probably wondering what all the fuss is about ChatGPT and how it can help you with writing. Well, I’m here to explain all the cool things this AI model can do.

How to use ChatGPT for writing
  1. Get the creative juices flowing: If you’re stuck and can’t come up with what to write about, ChatGPT can throw some ideas your way. It can suggest topics, outlines, and story ideas based on what you tell it.
  2. Write a first draft: If you hate writing first drafts (don’t worry, you’re not alone!), ChatGPT can write one for you! Give it some input, and it’ll create a draft document for you to work with.
  3. Proofread like a pro: ChatGPT is excellent at catching mistakes. It can check your grammar, spelling, and punctuation and suggest ways to improve your sentence structure and wording.
  4. Create all sorts of content: ChatGPT can generate content for you, whether you need product descriptions, blog posts, or social media updates.
  5. Finish your sentences: ChatGPT can even help you write more efficiently by suggesting the next word or phrase in a sentence.

Using ChatGPT for writing can be a valuable tool, but it has limitations. Review the output carefully, and always use your creativity and judgment to make final decisions on content and quality. ChatGPT may generate inappropriate or unclear content and may not be suitable for writing technical or specialized topics. Use ChatGPT as an assistant, not a replacement for human judgment.

The benefits of using ChatGPT for writing

We’ve covered the basics of what ChatGPT is and how it can help with writing, but it’s also important to take a closer look at the upsides and downsides of using this AI tool.

In this section, we’ll dive into how ChatGPT can make writing easier and more efficient. But we won’t stop there! We’ll also talk about some potential drawbacks you should be aware of. By the end of this section, you’ll have a clear idea of whether ChatGPT is the right choice for your writing needs.

ChatGPT Pros and Cons for writing

Some of the key benefits include:

  1. Increased productivity: ChatGPT can help you write faster and more efficiently, freeing up time and energy to focus on other aspects of the writing process.
  2. Access to a wealth of information: ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text, making it an excellent resource for generating ideas, finding supporting information, and enhancing the overall quality of your writing.
  3. Improved creativity: ChatGPT can provide inspiration and suggestions to help you generate unique ideas and perspectives, allowing you to express your creativity in new and exciting ways.
  4. Consistency and accuracy: ChatGPT can help ensure that your writing is consistent in tone, style, and content and can assist with spelling, grammar, and other language-related tasks.
  5. Assistance, not a replacement: ChatGPT should be used to aid the writing process, not as a replacement for human judgment and creativity.

Here are some potential drawbacks to using ChatGPT for writing:

  1. Limited understanding of context: While ChatGPT is trained on a wide range of text, it may not fully understand the context in which the writing is taking place. This can result in incorrect or inappropriate suggestions.
  2. Lack of human touch: Writing with ChatGPT may result in a lack of personal touch or human emotion in the text. While the model can generate writing that is grammatically correct and semantically sound, it may not convey the depth of feeling or personal connection that a human writer can provide.
  3. Lack of originality: As ChatGPT is trained on a vast amount of text and generates responses based on patterns it has learned, the content produced could be similar to existing text. This can be a concern for those in industries such as journalism or academia, where originality is highly valued.
  4. Dependence on technology: Using ChatGPT as a writing tool may increase the writer’s reliance on technology, leading to a loss of traditional writing skills and a reduced ability to write without assistance.
  5. Potential for bias: ChatGPT may reflect the biases and prejudices of the data it was trained on, as with any AI-powered tool. This can result in biased or unfair writing.

An overview of the writing process using ChatGPT

To wrap up this lesson on introducing ChatGPT and its writing capabilities, I want to give you an overview of the writing process using ChatGPT.

First, you’ll need to determine the purpose of your writing and who your target audience is. This is an important step because it helps you tailor your writing to your reader’s needs and interests.

Next, you’ll need to ask ChatGPT to generate text based on your writing prompt. You’ll do this by sending a request to the API, which will then respond with generated text.

Once you receive the generated text, you’ll need to review it and make any necessary edits. This step is important because it allows you to fine-tune the content to your needs and make it as effective as possible.

Finally, you’ll need to publish or share your writing. Whether you’re writing a blog post, a newsletter, or an article, there are many ways to share your content with your target audience.

So there you have it, a brief rundown of how ChatGPT can help with your writing. But don’t worry; we’ll dive into the details in tomorrow’s lesson. We’ll cover how to determine the purpose and audience for your writing to make sure the output from ChatGPT is the best it can be. Stay tuned!
